Sister Cities Concert
Setagaya Citizens Chorus will perform selections from the choral suite “Life of Water”, nostalgic Japanese songs featuring the seasons in Japan, a few favorite selections from its repertoire and Sakura-Sakura (Cherry Blossoms). The Bison Men’s Chorus will present selections from the concerts it has held throughout 2007-2008.
Also featured at the concert will be Mr. Aran Matsuda, a student from Japan who is studying voice at the Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba.
Tickets for the concert are available from members of the Bison Men’s Chorus, the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (774-5909 or e-mail) and McNally Robinson – Grant Park.
Setagaya is a sister city of Winnipeg. The two cities first became friends in 1960 through a children’s art exchange program. This friendship was strengthened when the cities established a Sister Cities relationship in October 1970. Dr. William Norrie was Mayor of Winnipeg when this relationship was established. Since then there have been several occasions when citizens of Setagaya have visited Winnipeg.
Founded in 1987, the Setagaya Citizens Chorus is a mixed voice community choir with approximately 110 members. Its musical director is Mr. Akihiro Kanagawa who also is a director of the Japan Choral Association. Forty-four members of the Chorus will be making the visit to Winnipeg along with the chorus leader, Mr. Yoshimasa Hatano and accompanist Ms. Tomomi Nakamura.
As a co-host, the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre has been extensively involved in planning arrangements for this visit to Winnipeg. On May 8, the Centre will oversee the tour to be undertaken by the Chorus. The tour will include visits to City Hall, where the flag of the City of Setagaya will be raised, The Forks and the Manitoba Legislature. In the evening a banquet will be held at the Centre. Representatives of various organizations will welcome the Chorus to the city and province. Both choirs and Mr. Matsuda will perform at this banquet.

Richard, Lianne and Camerata Nova will be joined by overtonists, percussionists, a keyboardist and a hurdy-gurdy player.
Sound by Dan Donahue.

Reaching Out - Now is the Time
Repertoire for this concert includes pieces from David MacIntyre’s Watershed Stories. MacIntyre, an acclaimed Regina-based composer and director, wrote Watershed Stories based on the true-life experiences of Regina’s GLBTchorus members. From gut-wrenching Taunts to the foot-tapping Vive la difference, this collection of songs moves and entertains. Also in the evening’s repertoire are jazz, pop, classical and comedic music ranging from the very romantic The Very Thought Of You to the very humerous Big Legged Women by the Righteous Mothers.
Adult: $15; Student and low income: $10
